MILWAUKEE-The UWM women's soccer team (3-2-0) cruised to a 2-0 win over Wright State (2-3-0) Sunday afternoon at Engelmann Field to open up their league schedule.

"It's a good way to start off the conference season," UWM coach Michael Moynihan said. "Wright State was picked to finish behind us by only one point in the preseason league poll, so it's nice to dominate them as much as we did."

The Panthers dominated possession throughout the entire match and outshot the Raiders, 19-3. Wright State didn't possess the ball past half field until the 25th minute, and recorded only one shot in the first half.

"We played such a difficult schedule early on and we're getting to see the rewards are paying off now," Moynihan said. "We came out determined and made a statement that we're ready to play (in the league). We want to be an attacking team, and that is something we'll continue to develop. I'm pleased with the progress we are making."

Freshman midfielder Melissa Richter scored the winning goal for UWM in the 40th minute, finishing on a shot from 18 yards out. Freshman forward Amber Jelinek recorded the assist after controlling down a cross into the box, which set up Richter for the 1-0 lead into halftime.

Junior forward Amy Oechsner tallied UWM's second goal in the 53rd minute, finishing from six yards out on a Milwaukee free kick.

UWM, who hadn't played a game since Sept. 9th, has won its past three games. The Panthers will travel to Green Bay to play the Phoenix on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. for their second game of the league schedule.

"A lot of teams would worry about not playing a game in two weeks, but it allowed us to work on a lot of things in training such as attacking out of the back and better possession," Moynihan said. "We have a tough week ahead with the game against Green Bay just two days away. They are a physical team and have a lot of fight. It's nice that we were able to get a lot of players in the game today, so we'll be rested for Tuesday."
