MILWAUKEE- After a strong first half showing, UWM (0-2) allowed four goals scored in the second half to lose to Oakland (2-0), 5-1, Sunday afternoon at Engelmann Field in the Verizon Wireless Invitational.
Though the Panthers (0-2) dominated the first half, Oakland scored first in the 25th minute when Anita Rapp bombed a 40-yard free kick over UWM goalkeeper Kerri St. Aubin. A senior midfielder, Rapp returned to the Grizzlies' squad this season after winning an Olympic Gold Medal for the Norwegian National Team last year.
The second half scoring opened when Oakland forward Ashley McGhee scored from five yards out at the 48:12 mark. McGhee quickly touch in a low-driven shot from teammate Debbie Cartmel to take the 2-0 lead. The Grizzlies scored three more goals before UWM's Alexa Torres put one at the 89th minute. The sophomore midfielder shot the loose ball at the top of Oakland's box, scoring off a deflection past substitute goalkeeper Laura Cowham.
"We want to build an aggressive mentality," UWM coach Michael Moynihan said after his team was shutout, 1-0, Friday night against Iowa. "We dominated the first half and let in an amazing goal. During halftime, I told the team that we were playing well but if we got down, 2-0, we would then push forward. I wanted us to go for a win, not sit back and lose by a goal or two."
"But doing that with a young defense left us a little more vulnerable and they capitalized on that. By no means am I worried. We took on two tough teams this weekend, and I'm encouraged by what I saw."
Oakland outshot Milwaukee by just two shots, 14-12. Grizzlies' goalkeeper Sarah Buckland made four saves and grabbed a shutout before existing in the 81st minute.
Oakland won the Verizon Wireless Invitational with a 2-1 victory over Marquette on Friday and today's defeat against the Panthers. Rapp was named the offensive MVP of the tournament and Buckland was named the defensive MVP. Also named to the Verizon Wireless All-Tournament Team from Oakland were McGhee and Erica Demers. Senior midfielder Erin Blaedow was selected to the team for the Panthers.
After Marquette's 2-1 victory over Iowa today in the tournament, both teams ended the weekend with a 1-1 record. Named to the all-tournament team from Marquette were Stephanie Welch, Erin Maysent and Laura Culhane, while Sarah Lynch, Katie Poole and Linzy Wolman represented Iowa.
