Men's Soccer Handed First Loss Of The Season

Sept. 15, 2001

OMAHA-The UWM men's soccer team (4-1-0) received its first loss of the season at the hands of Southwest Missouri State (2-3-0), 2-1, Saturday night at Creighton's Ameritas Classic.

The Bear's Jamal Sutton scored in the 22nd minute when he broke through the Panther defense for a 1v1 with UWM goalkeeper Chris Dadaian. Sutton's goal came from 10 yards out to lift Southwest Missouri State, 1-0, into halftime.

SMS was forced to play a man down when senior Chris Brunt received a red card for elbowing UWM midfielder Tighe Dombrowski in the 59th minute. The Bears caught a break just three minutes later when Doug Lascody capitalized on a soft back pass to Dadaian in UWM's defense. Lascody intercepted the pass near the top of the box and dribbled in to score, taking the 2-0 lead.

Milwaukee came back late in the game when junior defender Chad Dombrowski scored unassisted in the 79th minute. Dombrowski's cross from the right endline trickled through SMS's defense and past goakeeper Matt Pickens to trail, 2-1.

Outshooting the Bears, 14-8, the Panthers almost tied it up when Bobby Lish's shot was cleared off the line late in the game. Lish and forward Ryan Seymour led UWM with three shots a piece.

"We shouldn't have given away those two goals," Chad Dombrowski said. "We definitely had more of the opportunites, we just didn't put them away. We have a big test tomorrow playing Creighton, so we'll make sure we're ready for that and turn things around."

UWM gets ready to play No. 10 Creighton Sunday at 7:30 p.m. to conclude the tournament.
