MILWAUKEE- Iowa forward Sarah Lynch scored in the 80th minute to help beat UWM, 1-0, Friday night in the Panthers' season opener at Valley Field. Milwaukee's loss came as the opening match of the Verizon Wireless Invitational, hosted by both UWM and Marquette.

"You can tell that we are a team still putting things together since we have a lot of new faces on the field," UWM coach Michael Moynihan said. "I think we need to find ways to be more attacking, but I liked the intensity our team showed. There were a lot of encouraging things shown by us and it's great to start the season against such a strong opponent."

Iowa's goal came when senior Linzy Wolman split UWM's defense with a through ball to Lynch, who cracked a shot from 15 yards out past UWM goalkeeper Kerri St. Aubin. St. Aubin finished on the night with eight saves.

"They scored a good goal on us," UWM coach Michael Moynihan said. "They capitalized on a mistake in the back and split our defense."

The Panthers scored a goal early in the second half but were called for a foul in the Hawkeyes' box when UWM senior Erin Blaedow challenged Iowa goalkeeper Liz Hendel. The goal was called back after Blaedow got a touch on the ball and UWM senior Rana Thompson put it in the back of the net from 2 yards out.

"That was a slight blow for us," Moynihan said. "We kind of lost our momentum for a little while after that."

The Hawkeyes outshot the Panthers, 19-5, and also took the advantage on corner kicks, 7-1.

UWM hosts the second day of the Verizon Wireless Invitational on Sunday, Sept. 2, at Engelmann Field. The Panthers take on Oakland at 2:30 p.m. following the match-up of Marquette and Iowa at noon.
