MILWAUKEE -
Jason Frederick scored 20 points and the UWM men used a 29-10 second half run to score a convincing 79-57 win over UW-Green Bay Saturday night at a soldout Klotsche Center.
The Panthers led 38-34 with 16:10 remaining before embarking on the run. A Frederick three started the run, and almost eight minutes later Justin Lettenberger pitched-in with a three and Frederick added a single free throw to give UWM (11-10, 3-5 MCC) a 67-44 advantage with 6:10 remaining. The Phoenix (9-12, 2-6 MCC) could get no closer than 19 points the rest of the way.
"That was a big momentum boost," Frederick said. "That was great for us. When the shots are falling, the game is a lot easier."
UWM built a 16-point first half advantage at 27-11 after holding UWGB without a field goal for more than 11 minutes. But, the Phoenix responded to pull within 36-28 at halftime, and eventually UWGB closed to within four before the Panthers pulled away.
"We got more open looks in the second half," Clay Tucker said. "We were creating more, going to the basket more, and that creates more opportunities on the perimeter."
4,510 fans attended the game, the second-largest crowd in Klotsche Center history.
"It's nice to get home," coach Bo Ryan said. "Our fans ... what a lift. The difference in the game was we made shots. The attack and kick was working better."
"I was very disappointed in our effort defensively tonight," UWGB coach Mike Heideman said. "You have to give Milwaukee credit because they shot the threes and made them. I don't think our guys played with much urgency on the defensive end."
Tucker added 16 and Dan Weisse scored 12 for the Panthers, who broke a three-game losing streak and won for the third time in their last four contests against UWGB.
UWM returns to action Thursday night, hosting Loyola Chicago at 7 p.m.
