MILWAUKEE -
Jason Frederick scored 16 points to lead five Panthers in double figures as UWM knocked Detroit out of a share of the MCC title with an 80-69 victory Saturday afternoon at the Klotsche Center.
UWM will now face Wright State in the MCC Tournament Quarterfinals next Saturday in Dayton. Tipoff is set for 11 a.m. CST, and the game can be seen on CBS-58. Wright State finished as the fourth seed after Cleveland State came-from-behind to beat UW-Green Bay 63-60 Saturday night.
The Panthers never trailed after Dan Weisse knocked home a three-point shot giving UWM an 18-15 advantage with 9:06 left in the first half. Detroit got as close as four in the second half - pulling within 58-54 - but the Panthers used a 12-4 run over the next six minutes to clinch the win.
"Five guys in double figures again ... that's a nice statistic," Panther coach Bo Ryan said. "To have it happen two games in a row, that's a good sign."
Ronnie Jones added 15 points off the bench, while Clay Tucker scored 14 points, Kalombo Kadima added 13 and Chad Angeli pitched-in with 12.
"This is a big win for the program because we beat a team that was in first place," Ryan said. "Detroit was emotionally fired up, really ready to play, and we took away some things they wanted to do."
The Panthers led by 8 at halftime and then led by as many as 13 in the second half. UWM shot better than 51 percent for the game, the second-straight night the Panthers hit better than 50 percent from the field. UWM also shot a season-high 41 free throws, converting on 32.
Prior to the game, UWM honored seniors Chad Angeli, Mike Sowder, and Reggie Wheeler. Wheeler and Sowder both played in the final minutes, while Angeli made his 110th consecutive start in his UWM career.
"I'll tell you when it got emotional, when we got down in the locker room after the game," Angeli said. "From those first two years, I know how down people can be. It was just nice to see everyone so happy."
