Julie Yankus had 14 kills and Chrissy Schurla added 13 as UWM downed UWGB, 30-28, 30-25, 29-31, 30-25, Friday night.
With the win, the Panthers clinched the second seed for next week's Horizon League Conference Tournament, which will be held in Milwaukee. UWM beat UWGB for the 15th straight match, and the win in game three by the Phoenix broke a string of 33 straight games won in the series by the Panthers.
The Panthers (17-6, 12-2 Horizon League) also tallied 62 digs and 13 blocks while limiting the Phoenix (12-14, 5-9) to a .135 hitting percentage.
The match was tight throughout. UWM won game one after enduring 19 ties. The Panthers finally broke a 28-all tie and won the game on two Phoenix attack errors. In game two, UWM built an 11-6 advantage and maintained the lead until the Phoenix rallied to tie the game at 24. UWM responded, scoring on a Yankus service ace, a Carly Allison kill and a Sarah Potts kill to regain control of the game.
The Phoenix controlled much of game three, breaking free from a 15-all tie with five straight points. UWM eventually trailed 28-22, but rallied to tie the match at 29. The Phoenix then won the game thanks to a kill by Angie Sobocinski and a service ace from Krista Olearnick. The Panthers then won the match by battling through game four. UWM broke a 16-all tie with five straight points - four coming on UWGB errors. But that run settled the game and the match, as the Panthers did not allow the Phoenix any closer than four points the rest of the way.
Potts added eight kills while Allison, Laura Dallenbach and Tari Boutin had six kills apiece for the Panthers, who wrap up their regular season at 26th-ranked Cincinnati Sunday afternoon.
