Panthers Drop One To Marquette

Box Score

Nov. 1, 2001

MILWAUKEE - The UWM women's soccer team was defeated by cross-town rival Marquette, 3-0, Thursday afternoon at Engelmann Field. Both teams finished at 13-4 on the regular season as they gear up for their conference tournaments.

"I was very happy with how our players kept their composure and really took it to them," UWM coach Michael Moynihan said. "I thought we really came out strong in the second half. Overall, I thought it was a good, hard-fought game. We had just as many chances as they did, but they were able to finish. We just gave up two soft goals and didn't come back from it."

Kate Gordon led Marquette with two goals and one assist, with her goals coming just three minutes apart in the first half. Her first goal came unassisted in the 34th minute when she scored past UWM goalkeeper Kerri St. Aubin far post from 12 yards out on the right. Gordon initially received the ball off a long pass from the defense and dribbled into UWM's box.

Gordon's second goal in the 37th minute came when St. Aubin went down on the play. The Panther's keeper came out to challenge a one-on-one, but stayed down with an inury to her shoulder. The Marquette player dribbled past St. Aubin and played it across far post to Erin Maysent, who passed it to Gordon in the center for an easy goal.

"I'm disappointed because I thought we let Marquette off the hook," Moynihan said. "I thought we gave up two weak goals early and they're a hard team to come back against. They're a good team and possess the ball well, so we can't give goals away that easy. We've given up just one soft goal all year, and then we give up two in the first half to Marquette."

Laura Culhane added Marquette's third goal in the 87th minute when she headed in a cross from Gordon past Milwaukee goalkeeper Mary Duffy, who substituted in at halftime.

Marquette outshot UWM, 22-10. Golden Eagles goalkeeper Ashleigh Koenig recorded four saves on the game, while St. Aubin and Duffy each tallied one for UWM.

Milwaukee will now look forward to the Horizon League Tournament, held Nov. 8-11 in Detroit, Mich. The Panthers, who won the regular-season league championship after going undefeated in the league, will play in the semifinals on Fri., Nov. 9, after receiving a first-round bye. If UWM wins that match, it will play in the championship game on Sun., Nov. 11. The brackets and times are to be announced.
