GREEN BAY, Wis.- Ian Hoelker scored off a corner kick in overtime to give UWM the win over Green Bay, 2-1, Tuesday night at Phoenix Sports Center.
The Panthers (10-2, 2-0 Horizon) fought back from a first-half deficit to capture the Chancellor's Cup.
"It was a difficult game for us to get into rhythm, but we still created a lot of chances," UWM coach Louis Bennett said of his team's attack. "They scored against our run of play. When we continued to miss chances, there could have been a tendency to find a way to lose, but good teams find a way to win."
Hoelker's goal came at the 98:59 mark when he finished from close range on the far post off an assist from Marc Pehowski.
"I'm pleased the game came down to Ian Hoelker," Bennett said. "He might have been at fault for the Green Bay goal, so it's great to see he made up for it in a big way."
Down 1-0 at the half, UWM got the equalizer when Ryan Seymour headed in a corner kick from Pehowski. Seymour scored in the 83rd minute to force overtime.
Green Bay took the initial lead in the 25th minute when Brian Giovinazzi scored from 12 yards out. Michael Romenesko fed the ball from the endline into Giovinazzi, who took a touch past the UWM defense and then finished on goal.
"Despite hitting posts and saves by the goalkeeper, we were still diligent in our task of creating chances and being patient," Bennett said.
Fronting an unfamiliar lineup due to injuries, Milwaukee pressed hard in the second half to fight through Green Bay's direct style of play. UWM dominated the second half and overtime to record 22 shots, including 14 on goal. The Panthers took 16 corner kicks on the game, with two goals coming off the set pieces.
"We predicted that goals would come off set pieces," Bennett said. "I also said the game was either going to be style or steel, and today it was steel."
The Panthers captured the Chancellor's Cup, which goes to the winner of the annual Green Bay-Milwaukee game. Green Bay retained possession last year when the teams tied, 1-1.
