UWM Outlasts Cleveland St.

Oct. 6, 2001

Box Score

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The UWM women's volleyball team earned its fifth-straight victory with a hard-fought 30-28, 33-31, 28-30, 30-28 win over Cleveland St. Saturday afternoon.

Chrissy Schurla led the Panthers with 18 kills. Carly Allison added a career-high 14, Tari Boutin pitched-in with 12 and Laura Dallenbach collected 11.

"It was a heck of a match," UWM coach Kathy Litzau said. "Cleveland St. played really well. They outhit us, they outserved us, they outblocked us, but somehow we won."

The Vikings (5-8, 0-5 Horizon League) hit .262 for the match and tallied 10 blocks and seven aces. UWM (9-5, 5-1 Horizon League) hit .225 with five blocks and five aces. CSU was hurt, though, by 16 service errors.

UWM's middle attack of Schurla and Allison combined for 32 of UWM's 70 kills and played a key role in the match.

"We had a hard time putting the ball away on the outside, so we had to rely on the middle," Litzau said. "Our middles played very well."

Michelle Iafigliola led Cleveland St. with 20 kills, while Jamie Bouyer added 16 and Lori Betchker collected 11.

"They had a very balanced attack," Litzau said. "It was very difficult to stop their attackers and they played great defense."

UWM returns to action Friday night, welcoming in-state rival UW-Green Bay to the Klotsche Center for a 7 p.m. match.
