MILWAUKEE-Chad Dombrowski's goal in the second half proved to be the game-winner as UWM defeated
Marquette, 2-1, Wednesday night at Valley Fields. The Panthers (8-2, 1-0 Horizon) captured the Milwaukee Cup after
a strong performance against their cross-town rival, who fell to 4-3-1 on the season.
"It was a very exciting game, just like Milwaukee-Marquette games of past," UWM coach Louis Bennett said. "The
difference being we converted on some chances we had. Though we missed others, we had already scored and we
weren't playing catch-up."
Freshman midfielder Antou Jallow scored first for UWM in the 30th minute, with Kyle Lance and Ryan Seymour
recording the double assist. The play began when defender Trent Furtsch split Marquette with a ball down the left side,
finding Lance into space. The sophomore forward beat a defender on the endline to play Seymour at the near post, who
laid it back one-time to Jallow. Jallow chipped goalkeeper Adam Ubert from 15 yards to finish far post, giving the
Panthers the 1-0 lead through the half.
"A fantastic goal," Bennett said of Jallow's finish in the box. "He is extremely composed when he needs to be. He just
didn't give Ubert any time to adjust."
Lance assisted on the Panthers' second goal in the 53rd minute, driving a free kick into the box from the left side.
Defender Chad Dombrowski reached to head it down, scoring past Ubert near post from 10 yards out.
"That goal was true to character for Chad," Bennett said. "He scored a great goal after battling a big height difference
on defense all game."
Marquette had a good opportunity to score early in the second half when one of its player beat the offsides for a
breakaway. Junior goalkeeper Brad Swenby came up strong to make the save from close range, and finished with
seven saves on the match.
The Golden Eagles got on the board in the 77th minute when Jeff Gerlesits found Eric Marshall left open on the near
post, with Marshall finishing first-time past Swenby. Trailing 2-1, the Golden Eagles pushed numbers forward to take
momentum, but were unable to break the Panther defense. Marquette's late rally allowed them to take the slight
advantage over Milwaukee on shots, 14-13.
The Panthers will play their second state-rival in three days, as they host Wisconsin on Friday at 3 p.m.
