ST. PAUL, MINN.--Lisa Bengtsson and Amy Oechsner scored goals to lift UWM past Minnesota, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie stadium in front of 813 fans. The Panthers (13-3, 6-0 Horizon League) recorded their 11th shutout of the season to reset the school record, while also tying a school record for season wins.
Bengtsson opened scoring with a goal in the 39th minute off an assist from sophomore defender Jeney Walter. Walter dribbled through the Minnesota defense to find Bengtsson with a pass at the top of the box. Bengtsson took a touch and then chipped Minnesota goalkeeper Julie Eibensteiner, who was off her line, from 18 yards out to put the Panthers up 1-0 into halftime.
UWM's insurance goal came in the 74th minute when Oechsner dribbled past three Golden Gophers on the endline, committed Eibensteiner and struck a far post shot from eight yards out.
"In the first half, we were playing into a strong wind so I thought it was an even game," UWM coach Michael Moynihan said. "But we really took control in the second half again. I'm really happy with the way we're moving the ball around. The team is fired up for the season to keep going on."
The Panthers dominated most of the second half, and held off a late Gopher rally to preserve the shutout. Minnesota (4-11, 3-7 Big Ten) had two good chances to score in the first half, hitting the open post on one, and outshot Milwaukee, 13-10. Goalkeeper Kerri St. Aubin recorded five saves on the match and picked up her fourth shutout on the season.
UWM's stingy defense of starters Maggie Suminski, Carrie Durand and Walter have been a dominating force for opponents to try to penetrate. Sophomore Erin Shaughnessy and freshmen Brenda Andrews and Sara Lewis have also rotated as the starting fourth defender, helping add to nine shutouts credited to the team this season.
"What is amazing to me is that there is not one single starter in the defense from a year ago, and we've had 11 shutouts this season," Moynihan said. "There are many things to attribute that to, but the defining thing has been the team's chemistry. They have high expectations of each other and they demand that from each other without upsetting one another. They're just all on the same page."
The win gives UWM its first win over Minnesota in the seven-game series. The Panthers hold an all-time record of 1-5-1 over the Golden Gophers.
Milwaukee returns to action at home this week to host its last game of the regular season. The Panthers welcome Marquette on Thursday, Nov. 1, at 2 p.m.
