Seymour Scores To Lead UWM Over Cleveland State In Men's Soccer

Oct. 21, 2001

CLEVELAND, OHIO--Ryan Seymour scored the lone goal to give UWM a 1-0 win over Cleveland State Sunday afternoon at Krenzler Field. The Horizon League victory clinches UWM's hosting of the league tournament quarterfinal at the end of the regular season.

"We were effective today," UWM coach Louis Bennett said. "Even though we're not playing as sharp as we have in previous games, we still played well enough to deserve the result."

Seymour scored his 10th goal of the season in the 29th minute off an assist from Kyle Lance. Lance crossed it in from the right side and Seymour flicked it over CSU goalkeeper James Kryger from the near post to give UWM the 1-0 lead through the half.

Milwaukee (13-3, 4-0 Horizon) dominated the match and especially wore down CSU (2-13, 0-7 Horizon) in the second half, recording 10 corner kicks for the 14-1 advantage overall. The Panthers outshot Cleveland State, 12-8, on the game. The physical Vikings committed 21 fouls on the match.

"It's a welcome rest for next weekend's games, since we don't have any in the midweek," Bennett said. "We definitely need it, we've been a little ragged overall. The real positive is that we're getting it done and winning games. If we could just keep people off the injury list, that would be great."

Milwaukee has been playing through injuries the past few weeks, while defender Evan Richardson (ankle) and midfielder Antou Jallow (knee) have been out of training. After scoring a pair of goals in UWM's 3-2 loss to Akron on Friday, sophomore forward B.J. Blake left today's game suffering an ankle injury.

UWM travels on the road again for a pair of league games next weekend at Butler and Wright State. Milwaukee will then host UIC on Nov. 1 before the league tournament quarterfinal on Sat., Nov. 10.
