Box Score

Oct. 10, 2001

MADISON-Evann Franklin scored two goals to lead UWM over Wisconsin, 2-0, Wednesday night at the McClimon Soccer Complex. The Panthers (9-2, 3-0 Horizon) recorded their ninth-straight win to tie the school record for most consecutive wins in a season.

"Winning our ninth-straight game can only point to one thing-leadership," UWM Michael Moynihan said. "Our leaders are showing a mental toughness and the team really has developed a great chemistry. They believe in themselves and it's awesome to be a part of."

Franklin's first goal came after a Panther corner kick when she headed in a loose ball from the top of the box. Her header bounced past Wisconsin goalkeeper Kelly Conway to give UWM the 1-0 lead in the 75th minute.

The sophomore forward recorded her second goal late in the game after taking it from a Badger defender. Franklin quickly broke towards goal to score over Conway from 16 yards out and give UWM the 2-0 lead in the 88th minute.

"I just got to the second ball and put a head on it," Franklin said of her first goal. "On the second goal, I was thinking about just getting the ball and trying to put us up by two goals to put the game out of reach."

The Panthers started the first half dictating play, but the Badgers broke in to set the tempo. UWM goalkeeper Kerri St. Aubin kept a clean sheet in the half after making an unbelievable cat-like save. St. Aubin initially slipped on a mid-range shot, but quickly bounced up high enough to block it the second time around.

"In terms of chances on goal, the first half was pretty even but they set the tempo," Moynihan said "I felt we got into a rhythm in the second half after winning the battle of the midfield, which we didn't do in the first half.

UWM outshot the Badgers, 14-9. St. Aubin recorded four saves and the shutout, while Conway tallied five saves.

UWM first recorded nine-consecutive wins during the 1994 season. The victory tonight gives the Panthers their first win over Wisconsin after previously holding a 0-13-4. The teams have battled close the last six years to a 1-1-4 record including tonight's game.
