MILWAUKEE- Playing in their first conference game of the season, the UWM men's soccer team defeated Wright State University, 1-0, on Sunday at Engelmann Field. The Panthers are coming off back-to-back games with Saturday's 3-2 win over Yale, and now hold a 6-3 record overall.
"It's a very good win today. Wright State is a very explosive team with quality players that can create dangerous situations from innocuous positions," said UWM coach Louis Bennett. "For the first time for 90 minutes, with the exception of one opportunity, we managed to shut them down and in return create three or four quality opportunities, and converted on one of them."
Freshman Kyle Lance scored the game's lone goal in only the sixth minute of play off an assist from sophomore defender Chad Dombrowski. Dombrowski carried the ball from midfield and sent a great cross to the left side of the box, finding an open Lance. Lance controlled it down and shot it past WSU goalkeeper Matt Gibson for the 1-0 lead.
UWM challenged the Raiders the rest of the match, but were unable to capitalize on other chances created. The Panthers outshot Wright State, 13-9, with five of those shots coming on-goal.
