MILWAUKEE - UWM's three-year tradition of scoreless ties with intrastate rival UW-Madison came to an end tonight in the Panther's season-opener. UWM fell 3-1 to the Badgers in the opening match of the Verizon Wireless Milwaukee Cup at Marquette Valley Fields.
Sophomore defender Kristin Munyon scored for the Panthers in the 35th minute to tie the Badgers, 1-1, in the first half. The unassisted goal came off a corner kick by senior midfielder Lindsey Munkwitz. Munkwitz's ball was deflected in the Badger's box, and Munyon found the back of the net with a rifle shot from 10 yards out
The Badgers started the scoring with a goal by freshman midfielder Jenny Kundert in the 22nd minute. Kundert lobbed the ball from 25 yards out past Panther goalkeeper Mary Duffy. Duffy attempted to tip the ball over the post, but Kundert's shot dipped in just below it to give the Badgers the early lead.
"I'm disappointed because I know it's not our best soccer," said UWM coach Michael Moynihan. "We had good stretches, but there's no reason why we couldn't play that way the whole game."
In the second half, two Badgers' goals came within a five-minute span to decide the match. Junior defender Wynter Paro scored in the 57th minute and junior forward Natalie Roedler chipped one past Duffy in the 62nd minute to win the game, 3-1.
"We created some good chances to score, and our statistics were even at halftime. Our players came out strong in the beginning of the second half, but then gave up two goals in a short amount of time. We allowed a few of their individuals to dictate the outcome of the game," Moynihan said. "It's our first game of the season, so I think our team was a little tense. Our players certainly weren't scared, but it's a big game and we just didn't know how to handle it mentally,"
UWM hosts Tennessee in the second and final day of the tournament at 12 p.m. on Sunday, August 27th, at Engelmann Field.
