Panthers Rise Above Phoenix

Feb. 5, 2000

MILWAUKEE - In front a record Klotsche Center crowd of 4,833, the UW-Milwaukee Panthers stunned in-state rival UW-Green Bay, 67-42, on Saturday night.

The Panthers were led by freshman Clay Tucker (Lima, Ohio), who poured in 4 threes en route to a 14-point performance. Tucker also led UW-Milwaukee on the glass with eight boards. Senior Shaun Fountain (Columbus, Ohio) added 15 and freshman Kalombo Kadima (Milwaukee, Wis.) knocked in ten.

"The fans definitely got their money's worth," said head coach Bo Ryan. "It was definitely an advantage to have the crowd and nice to see more of our students."

UW-Milwaukee's defense was outstanding, holding the Phoenix to a meager 39.l% from the field and forcing 16 turnovers. The Panthers were also extremely disciplined, only committing 12 fouls and allowing UW-Green Bay five free throws all night.

"I thought our defense was a lot better [tonight]," said Tucker. "It didn't give them a whole lot of open looks."

The Panthers led throughout the contest, leading by as many as 12 in the first half. Hanging onto a slim three-point margin at the break, UW-Milwaukee busted loose on the Phoenix, outscoring UWGB by a whopping 33-11 in the final 12 minutes of the game.

"They had a great spurt in the second half and we were unable to get back in it and contend," said Phoenix head coach Mike Heideman.

With the win, UW-Milwaukee moved into fourth place in the MCC, trailing Detroit by just one game, who beat Illinois-Chicago, 73-55. The Panthers go on the road this week, facing Loyola Chicago, Thursday, Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. They then play at Illinois-Chicago next Saturday, beginning at 7 p.m.

The Panthers take a break from conference play, as they play host to Chicago State, Tuesday, Feb. 15. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
