MILWAUKEE-Posing an unfamiliar starting lineup, the UWM men's soccer team accomplished more than one goal in their 1-0 win over Cleveland State on Saturday night in Cleveland, Ohio. The Panthers were able to rest several key starters and still capture a victory in conference match-up as they head into Tuesday's quarterfinal game of the MCC tournament. They finish in fourth place of the conference standings with a 4-2-1 record, and are 10-8-1 overall.
UWM assistant coach Stan Anderson guided the team to victory, effectively implementing a mix of youth and veteran players into the rotation. Head coach Louis Bennett was not allowed to coach on the sideline for the Panthers as he was issued a red card in the previous match against UW-Green Bay. Anderson efficiently utilized reserves J.J. Klein, J.B. Matthews, and Derek Kasten, before skillfully inserting freshmen Kyle Lance, Bobby Lish, and Daniel Saavedra. The freshman subbed in with about 20 minutes remaining in the scoreless match, giving the Panthers an added push.
UWM finally broke through with a goal in the 81st minute when junior forward Ryan Seymour scored from inside the near post. The play began off a great combination between Lish and senior midfielder Blake Bostwick, earning both an assist on the goal. Lish played it deep on the right side to Bostwick, who drove it in from the endline. Seymour clipped it into the goal past Cleveland State goalkeeper James Kryger and an on-rushing defender from six yards out to lift the Panthers to victory.
"Without using many of our key starters, it was pleasing to see Coach Anderson utilize the squad and forge a victory in Cleveland," said Bennett, who watched the game from afar. "This game was important heading into the (MCC) tournament, as several of our starters our now well-rested, there were no yellow cards issued to our players, and we're healthy. We look forward to a good game against Butler."
Seeded fourth, UWM hosts Butler to a quarterfinal match in the opening round of the conference tournament on Tuesday, October 31st. The top four seeds of the eight-member conference host the quarterfinals, and the top-remaining seed will host the semifinals and the MCC championship game.
