Second Half Effort Not Enough For UWM Women's Soccer

Box Score

Oct. 22, 2000

MILWAUKEE-The UWM women's soccer team woke up too late from a dismal first half, as they were defeated by Michigan, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon in Ann Arbor. Allowing three goals in the first 30 minutes of play, the Panthers rallied back in the second half to outshoot the Wolverines, 14-0.

Michigan got off to a strong offensive start, scoring its first goal of the game in the 7th minute on a shot from senior Kacy Beitel. The Wolverines continued their pressure on goal when senior Marie Spaccarotella scored off a pass at the 26:24 mark. Two minutes later, junior Abby Tompkins finished off a ball from Beitel to give Michigan the 3-0 lead into halftime.

UWM mixed things up in the second half, revamping its lineup to a more offensive 3-4-3. The Panthers revived their play and dominated the field, spending much of the period in front of Michigan goalkeeper Carissa Stewart, who recorded seven saves in the match.

Sophomore Amy Oechsner scored in the 76th minute off an assist from freshman defender Jeney Walter to put the Panthers on the board, 3-1. With a minute and a half left in the game, senior Erin Blaedow nailed in an unassisted kick past Stewart to bring UWM within one goal.

The Wolverines held tight for the remainder of the game, controlling the ball and the clock to defeat the Panthers, 3-2. UWM outshot Michigan, 16-14 overall.

"We made a great come-back," said UWM coach Michael Moynihan. "There was a time in our program when we would have been happy with just that. Now, we're unhappy because we wasted a great opportunity and could have won the game against a strong team."
