UWM Men's Soccer Lose In California, 2-1

Oct. 21, 2000

MILWAUKEE-The UWM men's soccer team got off to a poor start on Saturday afternoon, allowing Saint Mary's to score two first half goals and take the game, 2-1, in Moraga, California. The Panthers provided a spirited second half, outshooting the Gaels, 20-6, but fell short in their valiant comeback as they return home with a 9-8 record on the season.

Saint Mary's sophomore Rica Reyes scored off a cross in the 23rd minute past UWM goalkeeper Brad Swenby. Four minutes later, junior Alex Avina converted on a penalty kick to give the Gaels a 2-0 lead. The kick was awarded after Swenby brought down a Saint Mary's player in the penalty box.

The Panthers snapped out of it at halftime, rejuvenating their attack as they recorded double their first half shots. After numerous attempts, UWM finally broke one in with a goal scored by sophomore forward Derek Kasten at the 62:59 mark. Kasten finished off a corner kick sent in by senior Scott Dombrowski to bring the game to 2-1. Though the Panthers outshot their opponent 30-12 overall, they were unable to capitalize on their chances past Kasten's goal.

"It's disappointing. We continued our inconsistency with a poor first half performance," said UWM coach Louis Bennett. "We came back in the second half to create a lot of chances and score, but it was not good enough to tie and then win."
