UWM Comes Back To Beat Akron, 2-1, In Men's Soccer

Oct. 15, 2000

MILWAUKEE-Senior midfielder Blake Bostwick scored the game-winner in the 83rd minute to lead the Panthers over Akron, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Engelmann Field. The Panthers earned their second straight win at home this weekend, moving up to a 9-7 overall record.

Bostwick put on a clinic in the midfield, combining with sophomore defender Chad Dombrowski on the play that led to UWM's come-from-behind victory. After receiving it from Bostwick in the attacking third, Dombrowski found him on the move in the middle with a great ball to his feet. Bostwick dribbled it into the box past traffic, and took-on Akron goalkeeper Kyle Milligan to slide it into the open net from six yards out on the left.

"We played really well. There wasn't a stage in the game that I thought we weren't capable of winning," said UWM coach Louis Bennett. "We stayed diligent to our cause, and we were rewarded with two excellent goals."

Down 1-0 at halftime, the Panthers got a lift from junior forward Ryan Seymour's equalizer in the 63rd minute. Bostwick's shot from inside the box hit the post, allowing Seymour to follow it in from a yard out.

Akron took the initial lead with a goal from forward Christer Larsen at the 32:55 minute mark. Coming into UWM's box off a throw-in, Larsen finished the loose the ball past sophomore goalkeeper Brad Swenby from 10 yards out in the middle.

"With only one major mistake in the game, it was fitting that we can get the result we want. At halftime we established the fact that we took too many touches in both boxes (on offense and defense), so we came out (in the second half) with that in mind," said Bennett. "Akron is a quality team that has beaten top teams in the country. They were ranked 16th in the country at the beginning of the year, so it's a good win for us."

UWM threatened with a balanced attack as six players each tallied three shots in the match. The Panthers outshot the Zips, 21-13, while Swenby recorded three saves.
