Jan. 15, 2000

DETROIT - The UWM women?s basketball team suffered its first conference loss of the season to Detroit Saturday afternoon, 71-68. The Panthers had a chance to tie the game with 20.2 seconds left, but were unable to get a shot off before time expired. UWM falls to 6-7 on the season, 1-1 in MCC play.

Senior center Kelly Lubbers led the UWM attack with 16 points. Other scorers in double figures where freshman guard Jessica Wilhite (12) and senior guard Daryl Schaffeld (11), who also led the team with six rebounds. Detroit was sparked by Molly Peterson?s 25 points and nine boards.

The Panthers started the second half with an 8-0 run and held the lead for nearly the entire half. But, Peterson?s two free throws with 1:33 left in the contest put the Titans up for good, 68-66.

"Against Cleveland State, we were all positive," said Panther head coach Sandy Botham. "Detroit's pressure got to us and rattled us. We need to handle that pressure whether we're on the road or at home."

The Panthers return home to the confines of the Klotsche Center on Wednesday, Jan. 19 to take on Valparaiso. UWM plays host to in-state and conference rival UW-Green Bay in Milwaukee on Jan. 22.
