Madison, Wis. - The UWM men's soccer team started the seaosn on the right foot by shutting out St. Mary's (CA), 1-0, at Wisconsin on Friday night.
The Panthers begin the season 1-0, while St. Mary's falls to 0-2.
Senior Joe Luedke scored the game's only goal, after a scramble eight yards out in the 31st minute.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Chris Dadaian posted a shutout in his first collegiate start.
"He didn't have much to do in the first half," said head coach Louis Bennett, "but in the second half, he made two fabulous saves that kept us in the game."
Including Dadaian, the Panthers started three freshman and one sophomore in the defense. Sophomore Mark Pehowski joined freshmen Dadaian, Chad Dombrowski and Evan Richardson in the backfield.
"I was surprised by the resilience of our defense," said Bennett. "Especially considering the youth we started back there.
UWM plays TCU on Sunday in Madison.
