Panther Volleyball Topples #9 Wisconsin, 3-1

MILWAUKEE - The UWM women's volleyball team bested intrastate rival, #9 Wisconsin, 3-1, Wednesday night in front of a record setting crowd. This marks the first time UWM has beaten Wisconsin since Sept. 12, 1988. The fan attendance of 1,012 set a home record for UWM women's volleyball.

The Panthers came back from a 7-1 deficit in game one to win the match opener, 15-12, but Wisconsin battled back to steal game two, 15-6. UWM dominated the third game, scoring 11 straight to start the game. The Panthers went on to win game three, 15-2.

In game four, the teams traded points until the Panthers rattled off eight straight to take the lead, 13-5. UWM had seven match point opportunities before knocking off the #9 Badgers, 15-11.

Chrissy Schurla(Chicago, Ill.-Evergreen Park) lead UWM with 19 kills, and Ericka Malterer (Waupun, Wis.-Waupun), the Panthers' all-time kills leader, added 16. Katie Schnieder (West Bend, Wis.-East), UWM's all-time assist leader, tallied 53 assits. 1998 MCC Newcomer of the Year Laura Dallenbach (Waterloo, Iowa-West) had 12 digs in the win.

The Panthers next play Marquette on Friday, Sept. 3, and Stephen F. Austin and Purdue on Saturday, Sept. 4 at the Purdue Invitational. UWM hosts the Milwaukee Journal Sentinnel Panther Invitational on Sept. 10-11, and play Duquesne, Marshall and Eastern Illinois in the two-day stretch.
