Milwaukee - The UWM men's soccer team kicked off the 27th annual Panther Invitational in winning fashion by defeating Western Michigan, 3-0, at Bavarian Soccer Complex.
The Panthers, ranked No. 9 in the region, improve to 3-0 on the season. Western Michigan falls to 2-2.
"I was pleased with our play on both sides of the ball," said UWM head coach Louis Bennett. "We defended with intensity, determination and with a level of skill. Plus, we had that classic UWM attacking style that is exciting for fans to watch."
Freshman goalkeeper Chris Dadaian recorded his third shutout in as many games. The Panther defense has yet to yield a goal this season.
Freshman Chad Dombrowski led the UWM offensive attack, scoring the game's first goal in the 15th minute after a scramble resulting from a corner kick. David Tompa tallied an assist.
Dombrowski later added an assist on UWM's third goal, which was put in by senior Joe Bernstein.
"Today, he was more disciplined than not, and he reaped the rewards of that," said Bennett.
The Panthers second goal was scored by Scott Dombrowski, brother of Chad. Tony Colvin picked up the assist.
"Western Michigan is a very good team," said Bennett. "They just beat the No. 16 team in the country (Notre Dame). But we managed to break their team down.
"We had several other players who did well. Scott Dombrowski, Tony Colvin, Blake Bostwick and Evan Richardson all had fine games," said Bennett.
The Panthers play Eastern Michigan on Sunday at Bavarian Soccer Complex. Gametime is 2:00 p.m.
**In game one of the Panther Invitational, Wisconsin defeated Eastern Michigan, 1-0. Salil Kenkre scored for the Badgers in the 61st minute on a penalty kick. Western Michigan plays Wisconsin tomorrow at noon at Bavarian Soccer Complex.
