May 6, 1999MILWAUKEE - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee track and field teams travel this weekend in split squads to compete at IUPUI on Friday, May 7, and the University of Illinois on Saturday, May 8.
The Panthers return to Indianapolis, Ind., on Friday on the heels of winning their second consecutive mens title and earning a second-place womens finish at last weekends MCC Championships held at the IUPUI track.
Traveling to IUPUI for the UWM womens team will be: Shawn Burrow (400m, 200m), Julie Metrish (javelin, long jump), Andrea Thibaudeau (100H, long jump) and Nicole Wee (100m, 200m, long jump). On the mens side, the travel team includes: Nate Andrews (110H, 400H), Scott Banaszak (pole vault, javelin), Brad Belter (400m, 200m), Ben Brikowski (100m, 200m), Paul McGinley (long jump, javelin, pole vault, 200m), Ryan Powell (5,000m), Bert Rogers (400m, 200m), Tony Tabliapietra (400m) and Nick Pryor (400m).
A smaller group of Panthers will travel on Saturday to the University of Illinois to compete in the Illini Twilight Meet. The field events are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m., with the last event of the day beginning at 7 p.m. Traveling for UWM will be: Emily Hauer (3,000m), Dot Bunnell (800m), Liz Pesch (800m), Matt Finger (800m), Eric Jelinski (800m) and Marshall Finnegan (800m).
Panther men earn their second consecutive outdoor conference title
The UWM mens team earned its second consecutive title at the MCC Outdoor Track and Field Championships last weekend, while the women fell 22 points short a repeat title
For the men, Paul McGinley (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.-Wisconsin Rapids) took the honor of "Outstanding Performer" with his first-place finish in the Javelin (17800") and the Pole Vault (1300"). Last year, McGinley also took first in the Javelin. Other first-place finishes were turned in by Chris Brace (Janesville, Wis.-Parker) in the Long Jump (22"00.25"), Nate Andrews (Sheboygan, Wis-Howards Grove) in the Triple Jump (4210.25"), and Nate Knudson (Medford, Wis.-Medford) in the 10,000 meter (32:32.67). Head coach Pete Corfeld, took "Mens Outdoor Track and Field Coach of the Year" for his second straight year.
On the womens side, Julie Metrish (West Bend, Wis.-East), Emily Hauer (Whitefish Bay, Wis.-Dominican), and Andrea Thibaudeau (Green Bay, Wis.-East) all repeated as MCC Champions in their events. Metrish in the Javelin (11900"), Hauer in the 3,000 meter (9:54.57) and Thibaudeau in the Long Jump (1708.75"). Shawn Burrow (Reedsburg, Wis.-Janesville Parker) turned in a first-place finish in the 400 meter (57.13).
