Men's Soccer Adds Three Recruits for 1999 Season

February 22, 1999

MILWAUKEE - Three new players will join the UWM men's soccer team, coach Louis Bennett announced today.

The three new players include two freshmen and one transfer student. Kevin Roethe (Wauwatosa, Wisc./Marquette) and Chad Dombrowski (West Allis, Wisc./Nathan Hale) will both have freshman eligibility for the Panthers. Ryan Spielmann (Brown Deer, Wisc./Milwaukee Marquette) used his freshman eligibility at UW-Green Bay last season and will be a sophomore.

"This recruiting class is shaping up nicely," said Bennett, who won the 1997 MCC Coach of the Year award. "It's a class that focuses on what the team needs right now, while touching on the future needs."

Dombrowski is the brother of current Panther midfielder Scott Dombrowski. The younger Dombrowski scored 61 goals and recorded 48 assists while in high school. He was named to the all-conference first team as a sophomore and is a two-time all-conference second team selection. Dombrowski's club team, Mequon United, won the State Cup in 1997.

"We are very pleased to have Chad follow in his brother's footsteps," said Bennett. "He is a very intense competitor. He never knows when he is beaten, hence, he very rarely is. He is strong and tenacious. He is the kind of recruit that has been the basis of UWM's past success."

Roethe is the brother of Marquette women's soccer player Kelly Roethe. He was a high school teammate of Spielmann. He helped Marquette High School to a pair of national rankings and a pair of state championships.

"He is a technically sound midfield player who has a stylish approach to the game," said Bennett. "He was an instrumental factor in helping Marquette to the state championship. He handles the ball well and distributes the ball well."

Spielmann is a midfielder/defender who was a teammate of Roethe's at Marquette High School. Spielmann played in 14 games, starting five, for the Phoenix last year. In high school, he was a second-team all-conference selection as a senior and helped Marquette to the state championship.

"He is tactically and technically very sound. He has a great left foot and he gained valuable Division I playing experience while at UWGB. He will fit into our system nicely."
