MILWAUKEE - Senior forward Joe Bernstein scored his second and third goals of the season as the UWM men's soccer team defeated Wisconsin, 2-1, in double overtime on Friday night.
The game, played at Wisconsin Lutheran High School, marked the second consecutive season that UWM defeated the Badgers. The Panthers improved to 10-6-1 on the season. The Badgers fell to 4-11-1.
The Badgers scored a goal midway through the first half, but Bernstein tied the score, 1-1, in the second half. He took a loose ball after a scramble in front of the goal and kicked it in with his left foot.
The score remained tied until the second overtime period. Eleven seconds in, Bernstein took a shot from 25 yards out that beat the Wisconsin keeper.
"That goal was unstoppable. There was no way anyone could get to that," said UWM coach Louis Bennett.
"Tonight we had an 11-man effort that allowed exceptional performances," said Bennett. "Bernie was the cherry on top tonight. That was the goal of the season."
Bernstein's heroics came during the Panthers' senior night. Bernstein, along with Joe Luedke, Tony Colvin and Byron Huson were honored before the game.
The Panthers play host to MCC foe Cleveland State on Sunday. Kickoff is at noon at Uihlein Soccer Park
