Panthers Win Closest Contest of Season

Oct. 16, 1999

MILWAUKEE - The UWM women's volleyball team almost suffered its first conference loss of the season to Butler Saturday afternoon, but managed to sneak by the visiting Bulldogs, three games to two. Laura Dallenbach's (Waterloo, Iowa-Waterloo) 25 kills and 18 blocks charged the Panthers to the victory after losing two of the first three games.

Butler caught the Panthers off guard to start the match, winning the first game 15-12. UWM came out with a vengeance in the second game, pounding the Bulldogs, 15-3.

UWM lost momentum early in the third game, falling behind 6-0 as Butler held on to win the game, 15-8. But, the Panthers refused to suffer their first home and conference loss of the season, winning game four, 15-10.

In the fifth and final game, both teams traded points in the rally scoring contest before Sue Raschka (Chicago, Ill.-Immaculate Heart of Mary) hammered the final two kills of the match and propelled the Panthers to a 15-9 game-five win.

The Panthers move to 17-1 on the season and remain undefeated in conference play at 6-0. UWM travels to Akron on Oct. 22 and Cleveland State on Oct. 23 before returning for its final homestand of the season.
