Panthers Run Past Crusaders

Kostowicz scores career-high 27 in road win

Valparaiso, Ind. – Steph Kostowicz poured in a career-high 27 points and registered her fifth double-double of the season to help the Milwaukee women's basketball team to a key road win over Valparaiso, 70-60, Thursday evening from the ARC.

Valparaiso (8-17, 4-10 Horizon) cut the Panther lead to just one with 7:40 remaining, but Milwaukee (14-10, 8-5 Horizon) responded with a 14-2 run to secure the win.

"We knew it was going to be a competitive game," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "We both push the pace, both have inside-outside players, posts that can shoot the three and guards that can take it on the drive.

"When the second quarter started and we were down a little bit, we just kept telling them, 'We're on the road.. We're going to be fine. We just need to go on our own little run and get some stops. And then we went on a 15-3 run to end the second quarter and that was huge for us. That was the lift that we needed."

Kostowicz had one of the best games of her young career, dominating from start to finish and closing out with a career-high 27 points, 12 rebounds, a pair of steals and assists and one block in 31 minutes. The 27 points are the most by a Panther since Ashley Green scored 30 on Feb. 28 last season.

Three other Panthers scored in double figures as UWM was very well balanced in this one.

Alexis Lindstrom had 12 points on 4-6 shooting from behind the arc. Jenny Lindner had another solid outing with 11 points, eight rebounds and four steals, while Sierra Ford-Washington added 11 points to go with her three assists.

Jasmyn Walker led the way for the Crusaders with 18 points and nine rebounds.

Thursday's game was one of runs, with each team tallying two runs of at least 10-or-more points.

After UWM claimed a 15-10 lead late in the first quarter, Valpo rattled off 10 straight to jump on top 20-15 with 6:15 left in the first half.

But, Milwaukee would respond, firing off on a big run of its own. Ford-Washington hit a jumper to start things off followed by a quick barrage of threes – two by Lindstrom and one by Lindner. A Kostowicz layup capped the run at 15-3 and closed out the first-half scoring with Milwaukee holding a 33-26 edge.

UWM stretched that lead to 40-29 early in the third after a three-pointer from Kostowicz.

Milwaukee would lead by as many as 15 early in the third only to see Valpo go on an 18-4 run and cut the lead to just one at 50-49 with 7:40 remaining.

The Panthers didn't back down though, answering back immediately with a 14-2 run of their own.

Ford-Washington once again got it started with a three-point play the hard way. Lindstrom then hit another triple and UWM wouldn't look back after that in securing the win.

Milwaukee shot 46.6 percent from the floor for the game, including 7-17 from behind the arc. Valparaiso claimed a narrow 37-30 edge in rebounding, while UWM turned the ball over just 13 times to go with its 10 assists.

The Panthers will make a stop at UIC Pavilion on their way home for a Saturday afternoon contest against the Flames, scheduled for a 3 p.m. tip. Saturday's game will be the inaugural "Stop The Violence" game for the Flames.
