Kostowicz Powers Panthers Past UIC

Big free throws late seal another road victory

CHICAGOSteph Kostowicz scored a game-high 24 points – including 20 in the second half – to power the Milwaukee women's basketball team to a 62-56 win over UIC Saturday afternoon at the UIC Pavilion.

Milwaukee (15-10, 9-5 Horizon League) overcame a slow a start and a big effort by the Flames (12-14, 3-12 Horizon) for yet another important road win.

This is the first time Milwaukee has won at UIC since January of 2010 and it is the first season sweep of the Flames in 10 years.

"We didn't come out with our best start, but we fought back very hard," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "There was a lot of adversity in the sense that they were killing us on the rebounds. We played with a lot of passion and energy today. Especially doing that two games in row for our young team I thought was impressive."

Kostowicz had yet another big game, pouring 20 of her 24 points in the second half to spark the comeback for Milwaukee. The Oak Creek native was extremely efficient, shooting 8-10 from the floor and a perfect 7-7 from the free-throw line. She also hauled in a team-best seven rebounds.

Milwaukee also got nine points from Alexis Lindstrom. Sierra Ford-Washington and Emma Roenneburg also were big for the Panthers Saturday, each netting eight points.

Melita Emanuel-Carr led UIC in scoring with a season-high 19 points. Ruvanna Campbell also was big for the Flames, scoring 15 and tying her career high with 24 rebounds.

After a slow start that saw Milwaukee score just six points in the opening frame, the Panthers started to get things together in second quarter.

Down by as many as 11, UWM slowly chipped away before going on a 6-0 spurt cut the deficit to just one at halftime.

After the break, it was all Kostowicz. The sophomore scored 14 of Milwaukee's 18 points in the third quarter and her two free throws gave UWM a 41-40 edge heading into the final stanza.

"When Ruvanna Campbell picked up her second foul I thought that could change the game a little bit," Rechlicz said. "We wanted to go at her and Steph took it upon herself. She really wanted the ball in the paint and she was really aggressive.

"She just put the ball in the basket; in tough situations, too."

The Panthers kept it up in the fourth. A lay up by Kostowicz at the 6:03 mark gave UWM it's largest lead of the game at 49-42. UIC put up a fight, cutting it to 52-50 after a three by Emanuel-Carr, but the Panthers had clutch free throws from Alysa Fischer, Kostowicz, Sydney Howard, Lindstrom and Roenneburg down the stretch to seal the win.

As a team, the Panthers hit 20 of their 25 free throws one game after shooting just a season-low 50 percent (9-18) at Valparaiso.

Milwaukee shot 40.8 percent from the floor for the game and limited UIC to just 29 percent shooting. UWM conceded an uncharacteristic 50-31 edge in rebounding, including 28 offensive rebounds by the Flames.

Up next, Milwaukee returns home for its final home stand of the season, hosting Northern Kentucky Thursday at 7 p.m. from the Klotsche Center.
