YSU Escapes On Newman’s Buzzer Beater

Panthers suffer heartbreaker at Youngstown

Youngstown, Ohio – Kelsea Newman hit a fade away shot from just inside the arc as time expired to give Youngstown State a 69-67 win over the Milwaukee women's basketball team Thursday night from the Beeghly Center.

The two teams traded the lead four times in the final three minutes, with Newman's buzzer beater giving YSU (12-2, 3-0 Horizon) the final edge.

Milwaukee (6-7, 0-2 Horizon) led by as many as 15 in the early going and played strong throughout – battling back numerous times and nearly forcing overtime in its first road league game of the year.

"I hate losing and I think our team hates it as much as I do," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "There were a lot of sad faces in (our locker room), but I think that's a good sign because they know they left it all on the court. We played hard enough to win and our girls really earned the opportunity to win. They just hit a big shot at the end of the game."

Steph Kostowicz, coming off the bench for the first time this season, led the Panthers with 14 points and nine rebounds. Sydney Howard added nine points and five boards, while a trio of UWM players scored eight a piece.

Nikki Arbanas tied her career high with 25 points, hitting 7-of-10 from behind the arc. As a team, Youngstown State hit 12 threes on the night – their sixth time connecting on at least 10 threes this season.

Milwaukee once again burst out of the gates in the opening period. Wakeman, making her first start of the season, scoring the first five points for Milwaukee as UWM established an early presence down low. Fellow post players Steph Kostowicz and Emma Roenneburg combined for six in the opening frame, while Cunningham netted seven points in the early going as Milwaukee staked a 20-8 lead after 10 minutes.

With Sarah Cash in foul trouble in the first half for YSU, the Penguins started to attack from outside the arc – draining seven threes in the first half. Nikki Arbanas' triple with 23 seconds left in the first half tied things up at 34-34 and Kostowicz's put back at the buzzer was waved off.

Milwaukee again started strong in the third, going up 46-39 on a three by Emma Roenneburg. But, a 15-2 run by the Penguins swung the score to 54-48 in favor of YSU heading into the fourth.

Sierra Ford-Washington's fast-break layup in the early going quickly erased the lead to tie things up at 54-54 with 7:13 to play and it was tight the rest of the way.

After Youngstown State went up 61-59, Howard drained a three from the corner for a Panther lead. With Milwaukee leading 64-63 after a Kostowicz layup, Newman got the crowd to its feet with a deep three only to see Alexis Lindstrom answer back with a three of her own for a 67-66 Milwaukee lead with 2:19 to play.

The Penguins were able to tied it up on a free throw by Indiya Benjamin with just 56 seconds left and Milwaukee wasn't able to score on what turned out to be their final possession, setting up Newman's buzzer beater.

Milwaukee once again dominated the rebounding margin, 46-25. UWM also had a 4-1 edge in blocked shots on the night, while each team forced nine turnovers.

"Where (our post play) showed up even more is in our offensive rebounding," Rechlicz said. "I thought our effort on the boards was tremendous by our post players and they were really aggressive tonight. I also commend our guards for getting them the ball. It's something we've been talking a lot about is we have threats inside.

"Our team was focused on doing the little things this game and doing what the coaches had said would get them the win and we were right there."

Milwaukee will now make the short drive from Youngstown to Cleveland for a Saturday noon (Central) contest against the Vikings from the Wolstein Center.
