Panthers Too Much For Cleveland State

Kostowicz ties career high in total team win

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Steph Kostowicz tied her career high with 18 points and Milwaukee women's basketball team applied smothering defense all game long en route to a 62-46 win over Cleveland State Saturday afternoon from the Wolstein Center.

Milwaukee (7-7, 1-2 Horizon) held CSU (3-11, 0-4) to just 12 made field goals for the game – just one shy of the school record of 11.

The Panther defense also held the Vikings to just 14 first-half points. That marked the lowest total of the season and is the third-lowest total in school history.

In fact, Milwaukee held CSU without a field goal for over a 10-minute span that saw the Panthers go from up by six to a 34-14 lead.

"I think our team is finding our groove in a sense of who we want to be," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "That's that defensive intensity and that pace on offense. I'm really proud of how we played today – especially in the first half. The intensity and focus we came out with came out with at the beginning of the game was probably the best that it has been all year."

Kostowicz was outstanding all game long. The sophomore tied her career high with 18 points, going a near-perfect 7-for-9 from the floor. She also had a game-high eight rebounds and three steals.

Jenny Lindner came off the bench for the first time and played a big role, going 7-for-10 for 14 points.

Sierra Ford-Washington also had a big game, scoring 11, including a three pointer midway through the fourth quarter to seal the win for Milwaukee.

Ashanti Abshaw and Adesuwa Aideyman each had 10 points to lead Cleveland State.

Milwaukee was once again strong in the early going and a layup by Sydney Howard made it 12-6 late in the first quarter. But, a jumper by Konner Harris at the buzzer cut the lead to just 12-9 at the end of one.

The second quarter belonged to the Panthers. Milwaukee scored the first six points of the quarter and limited CSU to just one three pointer and a pair of free throws during the entire quarter.

Howard forced a steal and laid it in on the other end to give Milwaukee a 10-point cushion. Kostowicz followed that with six-straight points of her own, followed by a steal by Lindner who then beat the buzzer with a lay in to make it 30-14 UWM at the break.

Milwaukee kept it up as Kostowicz and Lindner both got on the board right out of the halftime locker room to swell the lead to 34-14 before CSU would finally end their draught.

The Vikings tried their best to make a comeback, cutting the lead to just 12 with just over nine minutes remaining in the game. But a layup by Lindner and a three by Ford-Washington ended any hopes of a comeback in this one.

The two teams tied with 36 rebounds apiece, but Milwaukee had a dominating 40-12 edge in points in the paint. Cleveland State went to the free throw line 27 times, compared to Milwaukee's 10. For the game, the Panthers shot 43.3 percent from the floor and held CSU to just 26.7 percent.

Up next, the Panthers return to the Klotsche Center this Thursday when they host UIC at 7 p.m.
