Defense Sparks Panthers Past Oakland

Milwaukee used a 17-3 run in third quarter to take control

MILWAUKEE – Five players scored in double figures and the Milwaukee women's basketball team got back on track with a 77-64 win over Oakland University Saturday afternoon in front of 698 in the Klotsche Center.

Less than 48 hours after their first loss in six games, UWM (12-8, 6-3 Horizon) started slow but used a pair of big scoring runs to bridge the halftime intermission to go from down four to up 14.

The Panthers would never trail in the second half and recorded their sixth win in their last seven games.

"This really is a testament to our team to be able to bounce back in 48 hours and go from a style of play like Detroit had to how Oakland played," Panther head coach Kyle Rechlicz said.

"This is a big win for our program. It finishes out the first half of conference and now we're 6-3. We really put it all on the line today. I thought our team played very, very hard."

Sierra Ford-Washington led all players Saturday with 24 points – the third-straight game with at least 20 points for the junior.

Emma Roenneburg recorded the first double-double of her young career, scoring 11 to go with a season-high 10 rebounds.

Jenny Lindner added 16 points and seven rebounds, while Alexis Lindstrom and Steph Kostowicz both reached double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Defensively, the Panthers adjusted well as the game went along, limiting the Golden Grizzlies (12-8, 4-5 Horizon) to just 39.7 percent shooting, including just 4-18 from three in the final 20 minutes to hold Oakland 12 points below its season average in scoring.

"We kept talking that it's not about our offense. We know we can put points on the board, but it's all about how we defend," Rechlicz said. "That's where I was most proud tonight was how we stepped up on defense and really communicated."

After a slow start saw Milwaukee down 25-19 with five minutes to play in the first half, the Panthers then found their rhythm and made a big run.

Ford-Washington got it going with a jumper followed by a Lindner fast-break layup and suddenly the lead was just two. Another jumper by Kelsey Cunningham and a pair of free throws knotted things up at 27-27 and Ford-Washington's layup in the waning seconds of the first half put Milwaukee up 32-30 at the break.

Tied at 39 apiece early in the third quarter, the Panthers again went on a big run – this time the 17-3 variety – to take a commanding lead.

Lindner got it going with a lay in followed by Ford-Washington old fashioned three-point play. Roenneburg then got in on the action with a three ball and a fast break layup off a fancy feed from Kostowicz to very quickly make it 53-42. Lindstrom then hit one of her three deep shots for the game to stretch the lead to 14 and force an OU time out midway through the third.

With Oakland on the ropes, Milwaukee kept its foot on the gas. A Kostowicz bucket to start the fourth quarter made it 60-44 UWM, and a pair of Ford-Washington free throws gave Milwaukee its biggest lead of the day at 17.

The Panthers once again won the rebounding battle, 41-36, and had 14 assists on the day. Rechlicz's squad also forced 18 turnovers on the day and committed just 14 – the lowest total in seven games.

Milwaukee has just one game on the schedule next week - a Saturday contest at Green Bay scheduled for 1 p.m. from the Kress Center.
