Panthers’ Fast Start Too Much For Cougars

Lindstrom’s big fourth quarter secures the win

CHICAGO Alexis Lindstrom scored 10 points – all in the fourth quarter – as the Milwaukee women's basketball team fended off a late run by Chicago State for a 55-48 win at the Jones Convocation Center Sunday afternoon.

Milwaukee (6-6) led from start to finish in this one and was up by 11 at the half before holding off a pair of CSU (2-12) runs down the stretch.

"I felt like we came out very focused in the first half," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "We were really executing the offense and getting good shots – we just weren't knocking them all down. We were moving the ball well, and then in the second half we came out very complacent. We came out with less energy and played a little too free. As I told the team after the game, we're not going to beat anyone in our conference turning the ball over 20 times. We've got to figure that because we're about to hit conference play this weekend."

Sierra Ford-Washington led UWM with 16 points, including going 8-for-8 from the free throw line. Steph Kostowicz had 12 points and seven rebounds and Emma Roenneburg chipped in five points to go with her game-high eight rebounds.

Christina Wakeman was big off the bench with six points and six boards, while Alyssa Fischer also hauled in five rebounds.

Layne Murphy led the way for CSU, scoring 24 of the team's 48 points.

As a team, Milwaukee was once again dominant on the boards all game long, claiming a convincing 42-22 edge in rebounds.

The Panthers applied smothering defense right from the start, holding CSU to a season-low six points in the opening quarter. Roenneburg led the way in the opening 10 minutes with five points, including a game-opening triple as Milwaukee led 11-6 after one.

The offenses started to get going in the second. First it was Ford-Washington, who hit a pair of threes to stretch the led. Then it was Kostowicz who got hot late in the quarter with seven points as Milwaukee took a 30-19 lead into the break.

After the half, the Panthers struggled a bit to keep their offense clicking.

It was a forgettable third quarter for UWM as Chicago State was able to cut the lead to just six at 36-30 at the end of three.

CSU continued to chip away, whittling the Panther lead to just one with just over eight minutes to go in the game. That's when Lindstrom stepped up big. In a 50-second span, the junior drilled a three from the corner, stole a pass on defense and hit a mid-range jumper to suddenly return the lead to six at 43-37.

A layup by Sh'Toya Sanders with 2:33 to play closed it to 46-44, but another three by Lindstrom removed any doubt of a Cougar comeback and secured the win for Milwaukee.

"This was one of Alexis' best games since she's been here," Rechlicz said. "I know that it shows she only had 10 points, but all of those 10 points were in the second half. She came up really big for us and played with a lot of confidence down the stretch.

"We have a lot of faith that she can hit those big shots for us, but I think she actually did more on the defensive end. That's the most active I've seen her play defense. She was very scrappy and caused a lot of turnovers and deflections. It was nice to see her show that she has that aspect to her game."

The Panthers close out its nonconference schedule with a 6-5 record – the first winning nonleague mark since the 2001-02 season.

It's back to Horizon League action later this week for Milwaukee with a road swing to northeast Ohio. The Panthers take on Youngstown State Thursday afternoon before a Saturday contest at Cleveland State.
