Detroit’s Hot Shooting Ends Panther Winning Streak

Panthers fall for first time in six games

MILWAUKEE – Detroit shot a season-high 57 percent from the field – including 52 percent from behind the arc – to snap the Milwaukee women's basketball team's five-game winning streak with an 89-79 win at the Klotsche Center Thursday night.

Despite shooting nearly 50 percent themselves, UWM (11-8, 5-3 Horizon) lost for the first time since Jan. 7.

"We really didn't come out with any defensive energy tonight," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "A lot of credit to Detroit. They played tough, they hit open shots when they needed to and they're extremely well coached. They definitely deserved this win more than us."

Milwaukee closed the lead to just one with 3:16 left in the game. But, Detroit (9-10, 5-3 Horizon) made eight free throws in the closing minutes to ice the game away.

"We had a couple shots right around the basket toward the end of the game that needed to fall. Sierra doesn't normally miss free throws. There were a lot of things that didn't seem to go our way down the stretch and we have a day and half to get ready for Oakland so we have to get our defense figured out."

Four players scored in double figures on the night for the Panthers, led by Sierra Ford-Washington. The junior led all players with 24 points, also grabbing five rebounds.

Defending Horizon League Player of the Week Steph Kostowicz had 16 points and seven rebounds. Jenny Lindner was hot early and finished with 15, while Alexis Lindstrom added another 10.

Five players scored in double digits for the Titans, led by Rosanna Reynolds with 21.

UWM shot 56 percent from the floor in the opening period and got nine points from Lindner in the first 10 minutes to lead Milwaukee to a 22-16 lead after one.

Both teams were hot from the field in the entire first half, as Detroit shot 60 percent from the floor with Milwaukee not far behind at 58 percent. Ford-Washington led all players at the break with 14 points as UWM led 47-44 at half.

There were two big swings in the third quarter. The Titans opened up out of the half on fire, bursting out to a 63-51 lead after a 19-4 run to start the third.

The Panthers came right back though. Kostowicz started it with five straight to spark Milwaukee and Ford-Washington added five more as part of a 12-3 UWM run to close it to a 68-65 game with 10 minutes left.

Milwaukee cut to lead to just two twice early in the fourth to put the pressure on Detroit. The Titans stretched the lead back to 78-69, but again UWM refused to quit. Kostowicz hit a pair of shots on back-to-back possessions before a fast-break layup by Ford-Washington closed it to three.

Lindner then made it a one-point contest at 78-77 after a great drive and a layup to bring the crowd to its feet.

But, Lola Ristovski hit one of her three triples on the night and Detroit would go 8-for-8 from the free throw line from there to seal the win.

The two teams tied with 28 rebounds apiece. Detroit hit 12 threes compared to Milwaukee's eight, and held a 19-11 edge in free throws on the night.

UWM will host a hot Oakland team Saturday afternoon from the Klotsche Center at 2 p.m. as part of alumni day for the Panthers.
