Panthers Power Past Huskies For Big Win

Kostowicz posts career-high 20 rebounds

MILWAUKEE – Steph Kostowicz posted a career-high 20 rebounds to go with 11 points as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's basketball team cruised to a 73-58 win over Northern Illinois University Thursday afternoon at UWM Panther Arena.

The 20 rebounds by Kostowicz shattered her previous career best of 14 set late last year and came very close to the program record of 22 set by Traci Edwards – who will be inducted in the Milwaukee Athletics Hall of Fame this weekend.

Kostowicz was far from alone though as four Panthers (3-2) scored in double figures as UWM led from start to finish in the win.

Alexis Lindstrom, who transferred to Milwaukee from NIU (3-3), continued her hot shooting with a team-high 16 points – 12 of which came from behind he arc.

Sierra Ford-Washington added a season-high 15 points and seven rebounds, while Sydney Howard had 12 points to go with five assists.

"Northern Illinois is such a tough team," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "If you watch film, they're the team that's beating up on other teams and winning the hustle plays. We told our team we didn't need to match that tonight, we needed to exceed that tonight and I felt like we did that. We came out ready to play. Our starters played outstanding and when our bench came in they really supported them and kept that going."

Milwaukee burst out of the gates, scoring the first 12 points of the contest. In fact, the Panthers tied their season high with 22 points in the opening period, holding NIU to just nine points for an impressive 13-point lead after just 10 minutes of play.

UWM kept it rolling early in the second. An offensive outburst of eight straight by Lindstrom stretched the Panther lead to 30-11 just 15 minutes into the game. NIU was able to chip away a little at the three-pointer from mid court at the halftime buzzer by Howard brought the crowd to its feet for a 37-22 edge at the break.

There was no let up after halftime. Four-straight free throws by Emma Roenneburg followed by a Ford-Washington triple ballooned the lead to 24 points at 48-24 with 5:26 remaining in the third quarter.

NIU was able to piece together some things on the offensive side to trim the lead to just nine early in the fourth.

But, Milwaukee responded nicely, rattling off six straight to remove any doubt and secure the win.

"I couldn't be more proud of our girls," Rechlicz said. "I thought we stayed very consistent from one game to the next – from LaSalle to this game. Now we have to turn the corner and we're playing the No. 15 team in the country. It doesn't get much better than that."

Milwaukee will make the short trip to the Chicago area for a contest against 15th-ranked Northwestern. Tip off is scheduled for 2 p.m. from the Welsh-Ryan Arena.
