Coffey Carries No. 15 Wildcats Past Panthers

Offense goes cold in loss

Evanston, Ill.  – Nia Coffey scored 21 points to go with 14 rebounds to lead No. 15 Northwestern to a 69-44 win over the Milwaukee women's basketball team Sunday afternoon from Welsh-Ryan Arena.

With the win, the Wildcats (8-0) stretch their unbeaten streak to eight to start the season, while UWM falls to .500 at 3-3 on the young season.

"Northwestern is a very talented team," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "They're very long. I felt like our team came in and didn't back down though. I thought that we competed – especially on the defensive end and on the rebounding side of things. We just really struggled to put the ball in the basket. That's something that we have to figure out when we're playing bigger, stronger teams is how are we still going to get our shots."

Milwaukee played tough defense all day long against a team that came in with four players averaging over 15 points per game. UWM grabbed 46 rebounds on the day to NU's 48, including claiming a 17-11 edge on the offensive glass.

Offensively, the Panthers just couldn't quite get in a rhythm Sunday, shooting just 20.3 percent (13-64) from the floor and just 10.7 percent (3-28) from behind the arc.

Steph Kostowicz led the way for Milwaukee with 13 points – her second-straight game scoring in double digits. Kostowicz also tied for a team-high seven rebounds. Jenny Lindner chipped in six points to go with her seven rebounds, while Sydney Howard added another eight points on 2-5 shooting from behind the arc.

"We're still growing as a team," Rechlicz said. "Because we have so many new players, we learn new things about ourselves every game – win or lose. Some of the positives of this game were that we definitely crashed the boards really hard – especially Jenny and Steph. They really put themselves out there against a big team. I thought we were the aggressors. We really put ourselves in a position to attack the basket and get easier shots and slow the game down."

UWM started the game scoring the first four points on a pair of layups by Lindner and Kostowicz. But, a 12-0 run by the Wildcats opened things up. Milwaukee responded nicely, pulling back to within six at the end of the first.

It was all Northwestern in the second quarter as UWM just couldn't buy a basket and trailing 37-21 at the break.

Milwaukee came out focused in the second half. Kostowicz scored nine in a row for the Panthers to draw things to within 11 early in the third quarter.

"Steph gets this fuel under her and when she gets going, that really brings the whole team this high level energy," Rechlicz said. "We really took over in the third quarter and played Milwaukee basketball. We moved the ball well and during that stretch we got Steph the ball in the paint and allowed her to go more one-on-one. That's something we'll have to look to make sure we're doing."

While the Panther defense buckled down, forcing five-straight empty possessions by Northwestern, the offense again went cold and just couldn't get closer.

Akaylah Hayes scored her first collegiate points, netting a 15-foot jumper from the elbow to close out the scoring.

Milwaukee returns to the Land of Lincoln Thursday for a 6 p.m. tilt against Eastern Illinois from Lantz Arena.
