Baas was a three-year letterwinner in football and a two-year letterwinner in baseball for Wisconsin State College. During his football career, he was a member of the WSC Southern All-Star Team in 1958 and 1959, captained the team in 1959 and was awarded the game ball when Milwaukee beat previously-undefeated WSC-LaCrosse in October of 1959. On the baseball team he was second in team hitting in 1959 with a .328 average.
