Appleby was UWM's first track athlete to compete in a national decathlon. He competed in the 1955 National Decathlon and the 1956 Olympic Trials and Kansas Relays. He twice was named the outstanding athlete in the Carroll College Relays. Appleby competed on a state and national level in AAU Championships. The Rufus King graduate also played football and basketball at UWM, but continued his track pursuits at clubs in Ohio after his collegiate days. He also coached relay teams in Illinois, winning the Chicago Daily News Relays twice.
