Irish played guard and tackle for the Milwaukee State Teachers College football team. He was a member of the all-state team in 1930 and captained the team in 1931. Along with his football achievements, he excelled as a hammer thrower on the 1930-32 track and field squads. In the last two years of his collegiate career on the track and field team, MSTC was undefeated in dual meets and captured first place in the state meets. Irish, who graduated in 1939, retired after working 34 years for the Certain Teed Products Corporation.
