Hanrahan was a basketball standout for Milwaukee State Teachers College and UWM from 1951-54, returning in 1956-57 after serving two years in the armed forces. A small college honorable mention All-American, Hanrahan was a two-time co-captain and set a record for most points scored in one game with 33 in 1953-54. In that same game, he also set a then-record for most free throws made with 15.
