Netzel became one of UWM's first All-Conference stars when he was named to the WSC basketball team in 1956, the year marking the beginning of UWM. He lettered nine times on the Cardinal teams with four of those coming in basketball, where he was an All-Conference and team captain as a forward. He played end and tackle for three years on the football team and twice lettered in track as a shot putter. Netzel graduated with a bachelor's degree in education.
