Castagna was a four-year letterwinner in football and a two-year letterwinner in basketball from 1945-49 at Milwaukee State Teachers College. He was a member of the MSTC championship football teams in 1946 and 1947. He was also and assistant coach at Racine Park High School from 1949-56.
