An athlete at Milwaukee State Teachers College, Eckenrod was the first 12-letter winner in the school?s history, earning four letters apiece in three sports - basketball, football and track. A three-year all-conference player, who was chosen most valuable player in football, Eckenrod also held the school javelin record for 15 years. He participated in the high and broad jumps, winning all three events in the state conference meet in 1941. He graduated in 1942, earning a B.S. in physics and education.
