Heim competed in football, baseball, basketball and track for Milwaukee Extension. He was captain of the football and baseball teams and won a special award from the Wisconsin Alumni Club in 1954 as the Extension Center's Football Athlete of the Year. Heim was inducted into the Wisconsin High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in March of 1985 after compiling a record of 103-55-6 in 20 years of coaching.
