At UWM, Johns won all-state honors, set numerous goalkeeping records and played on teams that made the NCAA Tournament in 1979 and 1980. Upon completing his Panther career, Johns held the UWM season record for the lowest goals against average, 0.66 in 1979.
After leaving UWM, Johns played on two U.S. under-24 Olympic developmental teams and toured Italy with the Edmonton Drillers. In all, Johns played professional soccer for the Edmonton Drillers, Vancouver Whitecaps, Cleveland Force, Tacoma Stars and Cleveland Crunch.
