Akiwowo finshed his UWM career with 38 career goals, placing him among the school's all-time leaders. He also set the record for goals per game against Northwestern University when he scored four times. He was a member of two NCAA Tournament teams (1979 and 1980), the 1981 Collegiate All-State Team and the Wisconsin All-Star team from 1984 to 1989.
Akiwowo played on the Serbian Club Wisconsin State Championship teams in 1985, 1986 and 1988. He played for the Milwaukee Wave in 1986 and 1987 and was elected to the Wisconsin Soccer Hall of Fame in 1997.
