Lowell won seven letters at Milwaukee State Teachers College, four in football two in track and one in basketball. He started as an offensive and defensive end for four years on the football team, earned All- Conference honors in 1953 and captained the team in 1953 and '54. Lowell lettered in 1952 and 1953 on the track team, both years helping the Green Gulls to the conference championship, where he ran on the winning half- mile relay team. In basketball, Lowell was injured in 1953 but lettered in 1954. He won the Kibbe Award for his achievements in 1954. He was former president of the M Club and served on the Athletic Board.
