Reed played basketball for the Panthers in 1957-58, 1959-60 and 1964-67 and he won the Herman Kluge Award in 1969.

Reed led the team in scoring and rebounding during his sophomore, junior and senior years. He left UWM as the school's all-time scoring leader with 1,693 points and remains UWM's all-time rebounding leader with 1,529 boards. Reed was invited to tryout for the U.S. Olympic Team in 1964. Reed also served in the Air Force while at UWM.

Following his time at UWM, Reed became the second African-American to work in an NBA front office, serving as head scout for the Milwaukee Bucks. He also worked as an assistant coach for UWM and the University of Wisconsin.
